When this is useful
A recording can be long because the product took time, because the presenter searched for controls or because the brief tried to serve several audiences. Those are separate editorial issues. A faster playback speed does not resolve an unfocused story.
Diagnose and fix the cause
- Write a one-sentence purpose for the video and label every scene by the question it answers. Move unrelated features into another asset.
- Remove duplicate setup and idle waiting while preserving truthful context about meaningful processing or required preparation. Keep enough before-and-after evidence to explain the change.
- Watch the shorter version at normal speed with no narration from the editor. If the task becomes confusing, restore context rather than speeding through missing logic.
What this looks like in practice
An illustrative five-minute dashboard tour might contain a clear 45-second story about finding an overdue task and assigning its owner. The remaining reports, settings and account menus can become separate tutorials instead of competing with that story.
Limits and checks
Do not compress a lengthy real process into an apparently instantaneous result without indicating that time was condensed where that distinction matters. Shorter is useful only if the resulting video still answers its intended question.
Your next step
Create one focused master story, then derive shorter hooks from it while retaining the original recording.
