Why it matters
A 1920 × 1080 landscape frame is commonly called 1080p; 3840 × 2160 is commonly called UHD 4K. The shorthand can hide aspect-ratio differences, so specify actual width and height in a production brief.
Apply the idea to product footage
- Record the source dimensions and the region that must remain readable. Avoid assuming the entire desktop should always appear in the final frame.
- Specify separate delivery dimensions for each placement. Consider the player’s likely display size, not only the largest export option.
- Check the original and final export at native size and at their intended embedded size. Inspect real labels and results rather than judging only decorative backgrounds.
A concrete example
An illustrative 3840-pixel-wide recording reduced to a 960-pixel player is displayed at one quarter of its original width. More captured pixels may help a deliberate close-up, but displaying the whole interface still makes its labels small.
Limits and checks
Upscaling changes output dimensions without recreating authentic detail that was absent from the source. A portrait 1080 × 1920 recording also has a different composition from a landscape 1920 × 1080 recording.
