Why it matters
For software footage, shape determines how much interface can remain visible. A landscape dashboard and a portrait mobile screen need different compositions even when they explain the same task.
Apply the idea to product footage
- Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor to express the ratio in its simplest whole-number form.
- Compare the source shape with the destination before editing. Choose to preserve, crop or re-record the interface deliberately.
- Check captions and important controls inside the final frame. A mathematically correct ratio can still produce an unreadable product demonstration.
A concrete example
An illustrative 1080 × 1920 export reduces to 9:16. A 1920 × 1080 source reduces to 16:9. Turning the first pair of dimensions around does not transform a desktop interface into the responsive phone layout.
Limits and checks
Pixel dimensions, aspect ratio and display size are separate concepts. A large file can be displayed in a small player, and a player may add empty space to preserve the video’s shape. Avoid stretching the interface to fill a mismatched frame.
