When this is useful
Define the learner’s starting point. Someone entering an application for the first time needs different context from an administrator changing one setting. State required permissions and sample data before recording. This prevents the video from silently skipping a step the viewer cannot reproduce.
Choose the workflow
- Name one learning outcome. Replace “tour the dashboard” with a task such as “create and download a filtered report.” Keep optional configuration out of the main path.
- Record at learning speed. Pause around important controls, show the selected value and include the final state. Remove idle loading time without removing the sequence that connects actions.
- Check the tutorial without relying on sound. Provide captions for spoken instructions and enough on-screen context to locate the current step. Let a colleague attempt the task from the video.
A production example
A tutorial about inviting a teammate should establish the required role, show where the invitation begins and explain what happens after submission. If the demo environment does not send invitations, label the demonstration accordingly instead of presenting an unsent form as a delivered invitation.
Limits and checks
A captioned voiceover is not automatically a complete accessible alternative for every important visual detail. Review the learning task and provide text instructions where the video alone leaves necessary information unavailable.
Your next step
Create a short written step list beside the video. When a learner gets stuck, use their exact step to identify the shot or instruction that needs revision.
