Product demo storyboards

A storyboard connects a claim to a shot. Give every panel an entry state, an action and an observable result.

The working approach

  1. Start with the result that makes the product useful.
  2. Map the minimum actions needed to reach it.
  3. Assign a duration only after reading the on-screen text.

Give every panel an evidence job

Write a panel as a small contract: the screen opens with a particular state, an action changes something, and the viewer sees a result. A panel that only says “show dashboard” does not define what makes the footage usable. Add a fallback if the required state is unavailable. For example, a failed search result might mean choosing a prepared query rather than filling the shot with a spinner.

A useful storyboard table contains scene purpose, source route, entry state, action, exit state, copy and exclusions. Duration comes after those decisions. A dense result may need more reading time than a simple confirmation. Read the storyboard without the product names: the progression should still describe a coherent job. Then read it without the captions: the images should still offer evidence for that job.

A concrete example

A library workflow can move from broad results to a filter, a detail, a saved collection and the reopened collection.

Before recording this scenario, write down what the starting screen contains and what should be different at the end. This gives the reviewer an observable result to check, rather than asking them to approve a general impression.

The mistake to avoid

Six different screens can still tell no coherent story.

If the source cannot support the intended message, narrow the claim or capture the missing evidence. A transition, caption or voiceover can explain a real change; it should not manufacture one.

Put it into a production brief

Replace the bracketed fields before using this brief. The scenario is illustrative; keep only the actions your product actually supports.

Review before delivery

  • Evidence: can a new viewer identify the result described in the example without being told where to look?
  • Reading distance: are the relevant controls and labels understandable at the intended placement size?
  • Continuity: does each cut preserve the relationship between the action and its result?
  • Accuracy: does the final caption describe the visible product state, including any limits?
Using this with Demovela

The automatic URL workflow currently supports Postraid and Adfolio. Other product scenarios on this page are production-planning examples, not compatibility claims. Adapt the brief to your own recorder or editor. Demovela preserves originals and creates separate outputs; review the resulting file before publishing.
