Why it matters
These edits can make a product explanation feel coherent when the viewer moves between a presenter and the interface. They are most useful when the audio prepares or explains the image rather than describing a different action from the one visible.
Apply the idea to product footage
- Identify the line that introduces the next idea or completes the current one. Choose whether the picture should lead or follow that line.
- Align the overlap with a clear visual transition. Keep any essential product sound understandable and avoid conflicting narration.
- Review the sequence without watching the timeline. The viewer should follow the explanation naturally without needing to know the editing technique.
A concrete example
An illustrative J-cut might begin “Here is the saved view” while the presenter is still visible, then reveal the interface. An L-cut might keep the presenter’s explanation playing as the picture changes to the actual saved-view result.
Limits and checks
These names describe audio-picture timing, not particular transition effects. Ambient music spanning several scenes is not automatically a meaningful J-cut or L-cut. Check captions against the final audio timing after the overlap is edited.
Your next step
Use a small overlap to connect one difficult transition, then compare it with a direct cut before applying the technique throughout the video.
