Voiceover vs text-only product video

Voiceover can explain relationships while the viewer watches the interface. Text-only video works without sound but requires enough reading time and space. Choose for the viewing context, then make the meaning accessible in that context.

When this is useful

A dense dashboard already asks the viewer to read. Adding long captions may overload it. Conversely, a voice-only explanation can fail in a muted feed or for someone who cannot hear the audio. Plan the information across image, speech and text rather than duplicating everything at once.

How to make the decision

  1. Watch the intended placement muted. Decide which essential facts must remain visible for the video to make sense.
  2. If using narration, read the script against the actual actions. Leave room for the interface state to settle before introducing a new idea.
  3. Review captions, contrast and timing independently. Captions for speech should communicate that speech accurately; a short benefit headline serves a different purpose.
MAKE IT CONCRETE

A practical decision example

An illustrative import demo could use a brief on-screen label, “Map your columns”, while narration explains why matching matters. A silent version could instead split the same explanation across two slower shots with a clear mapping result.

Limits and checks

Demovela’s public preview examples use text and ambient audio; this guide is not a promise of automatic narration. Accessibility needs also depend on what information is conveyed visually and audibly, not simply whether subtitles exist.

Your next step

Produce a muted review and an audio review before approving the final edit.
