Template vs custom product video: what to standardise

Use a template to standardise decisions that should stay consistent, such as typography, spacing and motion rhythm. Use custom design where the product story needs a different structure, visual explanation or source treatment.

When this is useful

A template should constrain presentation without forcing every product into the same scene. Replacing only a logo and title usually leaves the evidence disconnected from the promise. A reusable system needs named scene roles and rules for what footage belongs in each role.

How to make the decision

  1. Separate fixed design rules from content decisions. Define type scale and transitions centrally, but select the task, evidence and result for each video.
  2. Set input limits for the reusable layout: headline length, minimum readable region, source duration and supported aspect ratios. Include a fallback when an input does not fit.
  3. Test the template with three meaningfully different workflows. Review whether it still explains each product without manual rescue or misleading reconstruction.
MAKE IT CONCRETE

A practical decision example

An illustrative launch template might accept a problem opener, two action clips, a result clip and an ending. A reporting product and a support tool can share that structure while showing entirely different tasks. A complex integration diagram may still need a bespoke scene.

Limits and checks

Template reuse does not guarantee production quality. The footage, claims and timing need review on every run. Respect the licence of any purchased reference rather than redistributing its project files as your own library.

Your next step

Standardise the visual grammar, then give the agent enough product evidence to choose the story.
