Comparisons / DEMOVELA FIELD GUIDE

MP4 vs GIF for product demos on your website

Use a web-compatible video file when you need playback controls, sound or a longer product sequence. An animated GIF can suit a very small visual loop, but compare its actual size and readability before choosing it.

When this is useful

MP4 names a container, so the codecs inside still matter for playback. A GIF has different image and animation constraints and is not a substitute for a fully accessible player. The right decision depends on the destination, motion complexity and what viewers need to control.

How to make the decision

  1. Export a representative motion segment in the formats accepted by the destination. Compare file bytes and visual detail using the same display dimensions.
  2. Test the published placement, including its still preview and reduced-motion experience. Provide a meaningful static alternative when the animation is not essential.
  3. For video, check the actual codec, controls and poster. For an email or third-party platform, verify its current support rather than assuming a web embed will work there.
MAKE IT CONCRETE

A practical decision example

An illustrative three-step onboarding explanation may need pausing to read a field label; a video player is useful there. A tiny decorative status pulse may need only a static icon or a short loop. Neither use case justifies embedding a large animation by default.

Limits and checks

There is no honest universal compression ratio between MP4 and GIF. Source content and settings determine the result. Autoplay behaviour also depends on browser policy and user settings.

Your next step

Choose the smallest tested asset that preserves the explanation and gives the viewer appropriate control.
